As we kick off March today, the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) is launching Sleep Awareness Month across Europe. As part of the initiative, they’re encouraging everyone to take part in Pyjama Day, a fun and impactful way to raise awareness about the importance of sleep.

What is Pyjama Day?

Pyjama Day is a lighthearted yet impactful initiative that invites participants to wear their pyjamas to work, school or any public event. The idea is simple: by stepping into the world in our most comfortable attire, we’re raising awareness about the critical importance of sleep to overall health. From children to adults, improving sleep habits can benefit everyone, helping to boost mood, productivity, and long-term well-being.

“The goal of Pyjama Day is to make sleep health relatable, accessible and fun while fostering a sense of community around a shared cause. It’s about starting a conversation and highlighting the essential role sleep plays in mental and physical health,” says the ESRS.

Why Sleep Awareness is Crucial

Despite its importance, sleep is often overlooked in the hustle of daily life. Yet, lack of adequate sleep can contribute to a myriad of health issues, ranging from increased stress and anxiety to long-term conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. For children, insufficient sleep can affect learning, emotional well-being, and behaviour.

Pyjama Day is an effort to spotlight the importance of sleep hygiene, particularly for children and adolescents, a group often most vulnerable to the negative effects of poor sleep habits. The event aims to make sleep health a relatable topic and drive positive change across Europe.

How to Get Involved in Pyjama Day

Getting involved is simple:

  1. Wear Your Pyjamas: Whether you're at work, school, or attending a local event, don your pyjamas for the day to raise awareness.

  2. Share the Experience: Use social media to amplify the message. Post photos with the hashtag #PJDay25ESRS to show your support and inspire others to join in.

The ESRS encourages everyone—from healthcare professionals and educators to corporate teams and families—to unite under the common goal of improving sleep health.

Sleep Awareness Month: A Focus on Children

The ESRS is also focusing on improving sleep for children and adolescents, recognizing the vital role sleep plays in their development. Research shows that poor sleep is linked to a range of problems for young people, including difficulty concentrating, increased anxiety, and even behavior issues. By participating in Pyjama Day, individuals and organizations are helping to draw attention to these important issues.

“Sleep is the foundation of a child’s growth, learning, and emotional well-being. Yet, in today’s fast-paced digital world, sleep is often compromised, leading to consequences that extend far beyond tired mornings,” the ESRS states.

Get Involved and Make a Difference

Pyjama Day is more than just a fun tradition—it’s an opportunity to make lasting change. By joining together in this lighthearted yet meaningful event, communities can help ensure better sleep for a healthier future.
